Newspaper Grading System - Points

An important note about grading - 90% of the grade will be calculated as part of the 3,000 point system. The other 10% of the grade is calculated from advertisements sold (as per Broward County/Florida State Journalism Course Descriptions)

The points listed below are POSSIBLE points that can be earned for each assignment or task, not guaranteed points.

Grading Scale

  • 2,700-3,000 points: A
  • 2,610-2670 points: B+
  • 2,400-2,580 points: B
  • 2,310-2,370 points: C+
  • 2,100-2,280 points: C
  • 2,010-2,070 points: D+
  • 1,800-1,980 points: D
  • 1,770 or less points: F

  • News story - timely posting: 200 points
  • News story - same day posting: 250 points

SOCIAL MEDIA
  • Break news via twitter: 50 points
  • Follow breaking news tweet with same day news brief: 50 points
  • Live Tweet an Event: 100 points
  • Create a Humans post: 100 points
  • Tweet a story link to your own story: 10 points
  • Retweet an original link or tweet from @EagleEyeMSD: 5 points


Photography

  • In school event: 50-100 points
  • After school event: 100-200 points (depends on length of event)
  • Home game sporting event: 200 points
  • Away game sporting event: 250-300 points
  • Mug shots: 10 points each
  • In class photo assignment: 20 points
  • Human's photo: 20 points
  • Photo illustration (cover): 100 points
  • Photo illustration: 20 points
  • Photo selected for print edition: 20 points each
  • Photo of the day/week: 30 points each
  • Posting an album to the web: 50 points
  • Photo appears in the print edition: 50 points per photo
  • Photo appears in an online story: 30 points per photo

  • Planning story on Trello: 50 points
  • Providing research: 50 points
  • 1st Story Draft: 100 points
  • 2nd Story Draft: 100 points
  • 3rd Story Draft: 100 points
  • Same day edits: 50 points
  • 24 hour edits: 25 points
  • Final Story : News (200 points), Editorial (200 points), Arts & Leisure (200 points), Sports (200 points), Feature/Investigative/Sports - 1 full page (300 points), Multi-page story (450 points)
  • Create an infographic: 150 points
  • Complete a survey/poll: 100 points
  • Effective use of Trello throughout deadline: 50 points
  • Layout - 1st Draft: 200 points
  • Layout - 2nd Draft: 200 points

Advertising/Fundraisers

*AS PART OF 3,000 POINT TALLY:

  • Business Contact Sheet (5 business w/attached refusals or contracts): 50 points
  • Additional refusal forms: 10 points each
  • Design an ad before you go on a sales call: 50 points each
  • Sell additional ads: 50 points per block sold (Does not apply if you roll over the extra dollar amount to another issue)
  • Candy Sale: 50 points per box sold
  • Planner Sale: 20 points per hour worked

  • 1 point per dollar sold (Minimum requirement $130 per issue = 2 business card ads)

  • Story idea sheets: 20 points each
  • Cleaning the lab: 10 points

  • Delivering papers: 10 points per room
  • Shout outs: 10 per shout out
  • Help out another staffer: 10-30 points
  • Interpersonal/Organization Skills assessment: 50 points each quarter
  • Productivity Proficiency Scale assessment: 50 points each quarter
  • Participate in student journalism contest - local, state or national: 40 points
  • Place in a student journalism contest - local, state, or national: 100 points
  • Attend a convention - local 50 points, state 100 points, national 500 points
  • Submit convention notes - 50 points

Point Deductions

  • Leaving assigned work area/computer area messy:  -15 points each time
  • Listening to music without headphones: - 15 points every time Mrs. Falkowski has to tell you to turn it off or down
  • Doing homework in class: -50 points each time
  • Using class time as free time (socializing, eating, not completing work): -50 points each time
  • First Day beyond deadline:    -100 (pink slip)   
  • Second Day beyond deadline    -200 (work reassigned)
